History

How to engage with veterans in your area

Lauren Vinciguerra | March 19, 2019

When Rishi Sharma was just a teenager, he began riding his bike to local retirement homes to interview World War II veterans. Not only was he interested in their stories, but he wanted a way to preserve their legacies. This is what led him to found Heroes of the Second World War, a nonprofit whose mission is to film as many interviews with World War II veterans as possible. To date, Heroes of the Second World War has interviewed over 800 veterans from all over the country.

Although Rishi himself tries to interview at least one veteran every day, he depends on the support of others to continue these important conversations. You can personally get involved by recommending a veteran to be interviewed or conducting the interview yourself.

Rishi is an example of age being just a number. With the 75th anniversary of D-Day approaching, it’s important to commemorate the legacy of veterans like Rishi has. Find out how you can get involved with other organizations that support veterans and their families.

Honor Flight Network

Founded by two sons of veterans, the Honor Flight Network strives to honor the sacrifices of World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans.

Honor Flight Network’s mission is to send as many veterans as possible to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials that commemorate them. To date, over 150,000 veterans have been able to visit the memorial dedicated in their honor.

Find out how you can volunteer with the Honor Flight Network.

Wounded Warrior Project

Wounded Warrior Project provides a variety of programs and services for injured veterans. Its focus on mental and physical wellness as well personal independence supports veterans in their transition back to civilian life.

There are numerous ways to get involved with the Wounded Warrior Project such as hosting a fundraiser, running a 5K, or live streaming to raise funds.

It’s important to acknowledge and support those who sacrifice so much for us. Let us know how you celebrate and honor veterans in your area.
