Friday Fun Fact: Peace Maze

Katie from EF | January 16, 2009

The hedge maze at Hampton Court is Great Britain’s oldest maze (dating back to the 1690s), but—at a mere half-mile—it’s not the longest.

That distinction belongs to the Peace Maze at Castlewellan Forest Park in County Down, Northern Ireland. The Peace Maze covers a total area of 2.7 acres and has a total path length of about two miles. The maze is made up of 6,000 Yew trees, which can live some 2,000 years.

The Peace Maze claims to be the world’s largest, but that honor apparently belongs to the Pineapple Garden Maze on the Dole Plantation in Wahiawa, Hawaii. Originally declared the World’s Largest Hedge Maze by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2001, the Pineapple Garden Maze expanded in 2007 and now has more than three miles of paths.

You can see a collection of photos on Flickr of the Peace Maze.
