Washington D.C. Blossoms with Pink and White Colors

EF Staff | April 1, 2016

Earlier this year, Washington, D.C. was blanketed with over two feet of snow. But now, weeks later, spring has sprung and the city’s iconic cherry blossoms have beautifully decorated Potomac Park.

In 1912, 3,000 cherry trees were donated to Washington, D.C. by Tokyo’s mayor, Yukio Ozaki. Though some of the initial gifted trees died, an additional 3,000 trees were soon received shortly after. Lining the Tidal Basin and blooming into vibrant pinks and whites, the cherry blossoms have long been a sight to behold. Not only are the trees celebrated for their beautiful color, but they signify the changing of seasons, and after this winter their blooming is that much sweeter.

Soon the flowers will fall and coat the ground, reminiscent of the snow. But before this happens D.C. will host its annual National Cherry Blossom Festival from March 20th to April 17th. So what’s happening?!

• On April 2nd the sky will fill with kites on the National Mall during the 6th annual Blossom Kite Festival.

• Enjoy some great food and music while watching fireworks on the Southwest Waterfront on April 9th.

• Constitution Avenue will be full of vibrant colors, sounds and performances on April 16th for the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade.

• The Japanese Street Festival and the Cherry Blast are wrapping up the festival, also on April 16th. The Japanese Street Festival will take place during the day and immerse attendees in a celebration of Japanese culture. Going into the early morning hours, the party will continue with the Cherry Blast and include food, music and activities native to Japan.

Whether you go to see the trees in full bloom, catch some of the entertainment or try delicious Japanese food, there is something for everyone. Better yet, plan a class trip to Washington, D.C. for next year and experience it with your students!
