Educating Students to Improve the World

Claudia Mihm | May 3, 2015

Now, more than ever, we believe it is important to help students find their place as global citizens. Even when you can’t go out and see the world, teachers still have the power to build global awareness in class.

Our research partners at the Harvard School of Education think so too, which is why they just released Educating Students to Improve the World, a free, open-access book. Written by Fernando M. Reimers, the Ford Foundation Professor of the Practice in International Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, it focuses on how to educate students to be global citizens, and outlines how to transform our schools to achieve those goals.

In this book you’ll find tangible ways to help your students become more curious and globally aware. One of the highlights is in chapter six, An Institutional Perspective and Global Education, which outlines how to align efforts on institutional levels to create lasting change.

Additionally, Fernando and his colleagues recently published two reports specifically addressing how to respond, guide, and support teaching and learning during COVID-19. The first focuses on supporting educational decision making to develop and implement effective responses to the pandemic. The second presents a set of online resources which support continuity of teaching and learning from education leaders around the world.

How are these resources inspiring you? Let us know at virtual.experiences@ef.com.

Claudia is a product owner on EF’s Emerging Tech team, which means driving innovation (the super-fast, all-in, “let’s build something awesome” kind) is a huge part of her job. She’s an educator at heart, too, with experience teaching young kids to code and building curriculum around different tech tools. Her favorite EF travel experience was visiting Davos, Switzerland to take in our Global Leadership Summit alongside students and teachers from around the world.
