AP English books and literature to bring your tour to life

ap english books of literary merit on a bookshelf

Are you traveling on our AP English Literature tour? Or do you just want to change up your reading list this year? These AP English books of literary merit are all frequently referenced on the AP English Literature and Composition Exam–and are inspired by the many places you can visit on our custom designed AP English Literature tour.

There was a Boy, by William Wordsworth – The first two days of your tour will be spent in the Lake District of England, where much of the scenery served as inspiration for the poems of William Wordsworth. You’ll even visit the poets former home, Rydal Mount, which now serves as a museum. His poem There was a Boy is heavily influenced by the nature around Wordsworth’s home.

Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte – The next stop on your trip will be the Haworth, where the Bronte sisters grew up. Wuthering Heights, one of the most frequently referenced works on the AP exam, describes the wild landscape that you’ll be seeing on your tour–bringing the scenery off the page and into real life.

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte – When visiting the hometown of the Bronte sisters, you can’t showcase one famous sister and not the other. Charlottes time at Cowan Boarding school and experience as a governess is said to have inspired her work.

King Lear or Henry VIII, by Shakespeare – No AP English Literature reading list is complete without Shakespeare. You’ll visit Shakespeare’s birthplace, his wife’s home, and later, the Globe Theater! Both King Lear and Henry VIII are set in England. It is rumored that the original Globe Theatre burnt down after a cannon was fired as part of a Henry VIII performance!

The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde – When visiting the University of Oxford, Oscar Wilde makes the perfect pre-tour read. Not only is he an alum of the famous university, his play, The Importance of Being Earnest, takes place nearby much of which you’ll be seeing.

Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen – The Roman baths aren’t the only reason Bath is famous– Jane Austen lived in the region during her early adulthood. Her most famous novel Pride and Prejudice is considered to have been inspired by locations from her childhood in the country, and her adult travels in Bath.

Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens – Great Expectations takes a critical look at 19th century English society and the city of London. This longtime fan favorite will come to life as you explore the city of London.

What’s on your pre-tour reading list? Let us know!
