Haunted History in Scotland

Mia Nguyen | October 29, 2018

Have you ever sworn you’ve felt something brush up against you, but when you look there’s nothing there? It’s almost as if you’re being watched by someone—someone you cannot see. This feeling is experienced by many who visit Edinburgh, Scotland, as it’s considered to be one of the most haunted cities in the United Kingdom. But what’s so scary about Scotland’s capital city? It’s not like ghosts exist…right?

The brave teachers and students who are courageous enough to see at least a little of Edinburgh’s secret past may consider partaking in the Specters of Scotland excursion while on their tour of Scotland. Wonder what they might see? Read below.

Greyfriars Kirkyard

Located in Old Town, groups will venture away from the bright streetlights into the dark forest to see where so many religious persecutions took place in the 17th century. It’s not difficult to mistake the crunch of a leaf beneath your own foot as someone (or something) creeping up behind you. People have been known not to return from Greyfriars Kirkyard, but I dare those who are up for a challenge to test their fate.

Niddry Street Vaults

As groups climb beneath the city streets into these hidden vaults, they’ll enter into a tunnel of darkness with only gas lamps for light. It’s believed that these passageways were used to hunt down the infamous serial killers Burke and Hare. Those who wander below the city streets may still sense the torment and eeriness that linger down below.

Edinburgh Castle Tour

All remaining survivors will have the opportunity to walk within the cold walls of Edinburgh Castle itself. Built in 850 B.C., the castle has housed prisoners, witches, and plenty of secrets. The floorboards may creek, the walls may seem to whisper, and the energy may seem…off. So stay close to your guide, take a deep breath, and experience one of the most haunted castles in the world.
