Stay Cool Traveling the World with These Frozen Treats

Rachel Waldmann | August 13, 2013

Gelato
Kulfi

Here at EF, we know that travelling in the hot summer months can be exhausting. In order to keep spirits high and heads cool, it’s not uncommon for student tours in Rome, for instance, the birthplace of gelato, to try some tasty frozen treats come July and August. Ice cream is obviously a favorite worldwide; but is all ice cream created equal?

In a recent article written by The Travel Channel, we discovered that ice cream is not identical across the globe. We all adore our Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy. But what should you look for while abroad when you really need to cool off? Here’s what we found:

Japan: Mochi Ice Cream – this frozen treat is a combination of one of Japan’s most beloved desserts, mocha (sticky rice), with classic American ice cream. Available in flavors such as green tea and red bean, this is a unique spin on America’s favorite treat.

Italy: Gelato – Italy is famous for its gelato, so this is really a must-have. Milkier and denser than typical American ice cream, gelato is more flavorful and therefore more delicious.

France: Foie Gras Ice Cream – While not everyone’s favorite due to the use of duck liver as a prime ingredient, foie gras is a frozen French delicacy.

Turkey: Dondurma – Turkish ice cream has a similar stretchy texture to taffy, making it fun to play with and to eat. Whoever told you not to play with your food obviously hasn’t eaten this yet.

Germany: Spaghettis – Although it might look similar to Italian pasta, this dish is pure German dessert. It is made by passing vanilla ice cream through a pasta maker and finishing it off with a strawberry topping.

India: Kulfi – With a similar texture to custard, this Indian ice cream is made with condensed milk and sugar, and produced in exotic flavors such as saffron and cardamom.
