3 Things to do in Washington, D.C for Memorial Day Weekend

Brittany Geoffroy | May 29, 2016

National Memorial Day Concert

If you’re in Washington, D.C. this long weekend you won’t be short of things to do! Whether you’re looking to honor Memorial Day by attending a parade, a concert, or by visiting memorials, this city is offering it all. Here is a highlight of some of the many events taking place at our Nation’s Capital.

National Memorial Day Concert

Aired live on PBS, this concert is on Sunday night from 8pm to 9:30pm ET. Known to be one of PBS’s highest-rated programs, the National Memorial Day Concert will feature musical performances, documentary footage and readings to honor the military service of those who have sacrificed their lives for our country.

Arlington National Cemetery

This year marks the 148th annual National Memorial Day Observance dedicated to honoring America’s fallen military service members. At 11 am on Monday, the U.S. Army Military District of Washington will hold a Presidential Armed Forces Full Honor Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Following this event will be an observance program held by the Department of Defense. Both events are free and open to the public. While tickets are not needed, space is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Memorial Day Parade

National Memorial Day Parade

Beginning at 2 pm on Monday, this parade will travel along Constitution Avenue, pass the White House and end at 17th Street. Sponsored by the World War II Veterans Committee, this parade is put on each year to remember those who have lost their lives fighting for our country. Prepare for lots of flag-waving, patriotic marches and plenty of floats!
